  • The San Diego Chapter was established as a subsidiary of Yellow Ribbon Suicide Prevention Program®, International (headquartered in Westminster, Colorado) after the 1997 suicide of a fourteen year-old North San Diego County high school student.   The founding board members included the teen’s parents, minister, neighbors and friends and other dedicated members whose lives have been touched by suicide.
  • Our target population is youth/teen/young adults (ages 10-25) and the trusted adults that interact with this age group. In addition we provide suicide prevention presentations and training as well as technical assistance for government agencies, military, law enforcement, colleges, health classes, after-school programs, parent organizations, civic groups, service clubs, health & wellness fairs and community-based organizations.
  • YRSPP® uses the public heath model to address youth/teen/young adult suicide. Through education, training and public awareness campaigns, YRSPP® helps reduce stigma associated with asking for help while giving young people access to vital life skills. Using safe and effective suicide prevention messaging, the Ask 4 Help®! curriculum provides young people with knowledge to increase help seeking behavior for themselves or on behalf of others.  Yellow Ribbon Ask 4 Help!® cards are widely distributed as part of the program.
  • The YRSPP® Be A Link! adult gatekeeper training provides participants (school staff, family, community members) with knowledge to help them identify and respond to a young person at risk or in crisis and help connect them to resources to ensure that they receive the help they need. It is crucial that trusted adults in young people’s lives are able to respond appropriately and immediately – it can help a save a life!
  • The Be A Link!® Adult Suicide Prevention Gatekeeper Training and Ask 4 Help!® Suicide Prevention Education for Youth are listed on the Best Practices Registry: Adherence to Standards of the Suicide Prevention Resource Center (SPRC).  The content of practices listed on the registry address specific goals of the National Strategy for Suicide Prevention and is found to meet standards of accuracy, safety and programmatic guidelines.
  • Since 1997 the San Diego Chapter distributed nearly 1 million Ask 4 Help!® cards and provided comprehensive  suicide prevention education for over 350,000 middle/high school students, staff and parents in San Diego County.
